The Transition Buffer

Does your child melt down when it is time to switch activities? It is not defiance. The atypical brain needs time to “unplug” from one activity before moving to another.

Why it happens: ADHD and gifted children often experience hyperfocus, so when they are absorbed in something, their brain cannot simply stop right away.

  • Give a 5–10 minute warning before ending an activity.
  • Use a visual timer they can see.
  • Name what comes next: “In 5 minutes it’s bath time, then a story.”
  • Allow decompression time between activities.

Neurobiology of motivation

The ADHD brain’s reward system works differently: it needs immediate dopamine. Distant rewards such as “you’ll get this at Christmas” usually do not work well.

What actually works:

  • Small immediate rewards rather than large distant ones.
  • Value effort, not just results.
  • Make “boring” tasks more stimulating with a timer, challenge, or game.
  • Avoid punishments that demotivate even more.

Low-Stim Environment

An atypical child receives sensory stimulation more intensely. A room that is too noisy, too bright, or too colorful can create overload and lead to a meltdown.

Set up your space:

  • Create a calm corner with soft light and little noise.
  • Reduce visual clutter in work areas.
  • Offer noise-canceling headphones for difficult moments.
  • Avoid screens at least 1 hour before bedtime.
